Social media has a wonderful way of connecting communities in ways that weren't possible before. The network I've built and continue to shape has been a true blessing and I can attribute some of that to the power of multiple social platforms. It's through this medium that I've had the pleasure of connecting with Anitra Terrell, owner of the home decor brand Reflektion Design. When I came across her brand's profile on Instagram, I was instantly hooked!

Reflektion Design is a home decor brand based in Los Angeles, CA. The line has a gorgeous African cultural aesthetic that boasts vibrant colors in Ankara wax print fabric & mud cloth. The range of items include decorative pillows, table linens, neck pillows, head wraps and more. I was especially drawn to the dynamic colors of the Ankara wax print fabric used in the pillows and head wraps! Anitra's extensive background in sourcing and buying textiles provides a keen eye in curating her brand, which I'm so excited to share with you below!

What inspired you to start your brand?

In 2013, I found myself at a crossroads. I had been laid off twice in a two-year time span and decided it was time to forge my own path. In late 2013, I combined my skills in event production with textile buying and created Reflektion Design, a home decor brand for the culturally inspired.

Using a curated approach to sourcing textiles and a discerning eye for pattern, my pillows, travel accessories, and table linens (made with Ankara wax print fabric & mud cloth)  help you to create a life that feels fully expressed.

Where do you draw your inspiration when creating your products?

African culture across the diaspora inspires me. From art to food to dance we bring so much flavor to everything we do; it's deep rooted, it  pays homage, it's amazing. Of course African textiles in all their splendor and tradition inspire me as well as mid-century modern design.  Helping people see the value in creating a home that feels fully expressed motivates me. I believe your home is the ultimate canvas for self-expression and should be a reflection of who you are.

What's next for your brand?

I've been having a lot of fun playing around with wall art lately and may explore that in a real way this year.

More about Anitra:

She's a Los Angeles-based creative entrepreneur with over 15 years experience producing exhibits and cultural events.  The Philadelphia native has a bachelor’s of science and a MBA in marketing. In 2006, she was commissioned by the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery (Dayton, OH) to purchase kente cloth & other African textiles for their permanent collection and it was during this time that she was immersed in the beauty and history of African textiles. When the Boonshoft Museum got word that they would be one of the stops on the Smithsonian traveling exhibit, Wrapped In Pride, Ghanaian Kente Cloth & African American Identity, they called on Anitra again to plan the opening night reception which had the largest turnout in the Museum's history.
